E-cigarettes gain worldwide popularity as an alternative to conventional cigarettes among smokers. Propylene glycol (PG) and glycerol (G) are major constituents in the liquids of e-cigarettes. Therefore, methods for the quantitative assessment and uptake into the human body by inhalation are needed for PG and G.

Recently, ABF developed and validated a GC-MS method for the quantification of PG and G in various body fluids. Method validation according to FDA guidelines showed excellent results in terms of sensitivity, reproducibility and robustness. Moreover, the use of minimal sample volume along with a straightforward sample extraction procedure allows a time- and cost-efficient analysis of these compounds in large clinical studies.
