Biomarkers for e-cigarettes

E-cigarettes background

E-cigarettes are becoming more and more important. Sales of e-cigarettes nearly tripled every year since 2007 in the U.S.. However, until now relatively little research has been put behind this emerging area, especially when it comes to suitable biomarkers of exposure and effect.

Therefore, ABF has decided to invest in this growing market and successfully developed and validated a method for the simultaneous quantification of glycerol and propylene glycol by GC-MS, the 2 main e-liquid constituents.

Apart from these 2 e-cigarette specific biomarkers, also the "classical" biomarkers of exposure (for more information see "Nic+10" method) can be used in order to assess the nicotine dose uptake by e-cigarette users. Methods for biomarkers for a number of flavour compounds have also been established.

First results from an internal pilot study can be found here.
