Professor Dr. Gerhard Scherer (General Manager of ABF GmbH) is a biochemist and a habilitated toxicologist. He has worked for more than 30 years in the smoking and health area. He has expertise in all aspects of tobacco and health, such as:

  • Tobacco and smoke chemistry
  • In vitro toxicity testing of tobacco products
  • Human smoking behaviour
  • Epidemiology of smoking-related diseases
  • Design and evaluation of controlled human studies and field studies
  • Human biological monitoring and evaluation of biomarkers
  • Nicotine: chemistry, physiology, toxicology
  • Environmental tobacco smoke: scientific and legal aspects
  • Science-related legal aspects of tobacco products




Dr. Max Scherer (Substitute General Manager of ABF) is a chemist with extensive expertise in analytical chemistry, data analysis and scientific writing. His research interests are within tobacco, nutritional and environmental analytical chemistry. In his last role at the Nestle Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) his main activity and responsibility was the development of a lipidomics platform using high-resolution mass spectrometry.
